San Francisco
San Francisco is the fourth most populous city in California. San Francisco is a spectacular peninsula surrounded by water on three sides and grows from the inside out. This modern city has become one of Americas favourites and is visually spectacular. San Francisco days are better spent sunning by the bay and digesting lavish seafood dinners. San Francisco makes it fantastically easy to tap into the Good Life. Between the hot arts scene, the enticing boutiques, the breathtaking bay views, and all those stellar, locally focused restaurants and wine bars, it's the perfect place to indulge.
San Francisco is positioned between the ocean and Sierra Nevada Mountains to the east and west and redwood forests and the California desert to the north and south. On San Francisco's doorstep, the Bay, which fits neatly between the Golden Gate Bridge and the Bay Bridge, is not only tantalizingly beautiful, it's home to 14 small islands, including Alcatraz.
San Franciscos energy is infectious. There are many reasons why San Francisco is continuously rates as one of the most livable cities in the US. The city punches way above its weight with vigorous arts, culture, and restaurant and nightlife scenes. Its size makes it easy to explore and an efficient public transport system helps. This is one US city where a car could be considered a hindrance. We hope you enjoy exploring the City on the Bay as much as its residents enjoy living here. The City with so many attractions and landmarks it is hard to know where to start. You can take time to visit the Fishermans Wharf, Golden Gate Bridge, which opened in 1937 and immediately became the longest suspension bridge in the world, Alcatraz Island, Chinatown, Pier 39, San Francisco Cable Cars, Wine Country and plenty more attractions.
Out in the middle of the San Francisco Bay, the island of Alcatraz is a world unto itself. Isolation, one of the constants of island life for any inhabitant - soldier, guard, prisoner, Indian, bird or plant - is a recurrent theme in the unfolding history of Alcatraz. Visitors to the island cannot only explore the remnants of the prison, but can also learn about the Indian occupation of 1969 - 1971, early military defenses and the West Coast's first, and oldest operating, lighthouse. The orange towers of the Golden Gate Bridge, perhaps the best-loved symbol of San Francisco, are visible from almost every high point in the city. The bridge, which spans 4200ft, had taken only 52 months to design and build when it was opened in 1937. Driving across is a real thrill, racing under the towers, while the half-hour walk across allows you to take in its enormous size and absorb the views.
